Richie Dunbar aka Ko-Red was born April 30, 1983 in Bong County located in the small West African nation of Liberia. Under the tutelage of his grandfather Judge Rudolph James, a former POW turned judge, turned successful businessman, Ko-Red learned the value of hard work and that failure was not an option. However, at this point in the history of the nation of Liberia, as Ko-Red later learned, his parents were doing their best to shield him and his siblings from a brewing political upheaval, which would result in nearly two decades of civil warfare. Because of Liberia’s growing instability, Ko-red and his family fled their home and took refuge in Minnesota, USA. Shortly after their arrival, he learned that his older brother Richelieu was shot and killed back home. It was a difficult time for the family, but by God’s grace, they prevailed. In a strange environment, Ko-Red began to stray and his grandfather’s teachings began to take a back seat to hanging out with the wrong crowd. While riding in the car with his cousin Ben a local street hustler, he heard the song "Cruisin in the street" by Easy E, and the rest is history. He began penning poems, even skipping school. Known notoriously as a class clown Ko-Red would jokingly recite funny rhymes and one-liners to friends and strangers he met on the bus. Fellow MC's would always tell him, "Man you cold you should rap, what’s your name"? Back then, friends called him RED, his initials. But one day, after punching a guy in the face in defense of a friend, a classmate jokingly called him KO-Red. The name caught on and he adopted it as a stage name. Fighting earned him a nickname not just with his friends but in school as well. So after numerous fights, Ko-red was kicked out of school. With nowhere else to go, he enrolled at The High School of Recording Arts (HSRA). While attending HSRA, he met producer Tavarris "Unit 7" Stewart who after reading some poems Ko-Red had written was so impressed that he encouraged him to take his music seriously. During this time Ko-Red was reunited with his older brother Eric(Smoke)Dunbar aka The General. Eric was attending college for music production and he took Ko-Red under his wing as a talent on his upstart production company. Though underdeveloped as a MC, Eric noticed that Ko-Red had an ear for production, and began teaching him MIDI programs. Red credits Eric, Unit 7, and J-Doe with helping him grow as a producer and powerhouse in this ever-evolving music industry. Ko-Red would once again face tragedy as he witnessed the shooting death of his brother and mentor Eric (smoke) Dunbar. He has since said he can never recover from the loss of his two brother but will forever use it as motivation towards success. Ko-Red is a favorite amongst the Minneapolis talent crop, in the years to come, expect him to continue his rise to stardom and take the industry by storm.
